Strike Looms as Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) Summon Extraordinary NEC Meeting
The organized Labor has followed up on their warning to proceed on a nationwide strike over the beating of Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero.
The Nigeria Labor Congress and Trade Union Congress leaders are recently in an extraordinary National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.
The NEC meeting is to examine modalities about the suggested strike and signed MOU with the Federal Government after fuel subsidy removal.
Federal Capital Territory Abuja, the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have come together in an extraordinary National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.
The National Vice President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Tommy Etim, revealed this in an interview with The Punch on November 7, Tuesday.
Tommy Etim said the NEC meeting will be seen at modalities of the arranged strike following the brutalism of the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) appended a signature between the Federal government and the Organized Labor on October 2, 2023after the fuel subsidy removal.
Etim proceeded:
“We will be holding an extraordinary NEC meeting any moment from now. The modalities include the injustice meted upon comrade Ajaero, the planned strike, and the MOU signed with the Federal Government. More details will be revealed after the meeting.”
Meanwhile, it was reported that Ajaero was arrested at the NLC secretariat by the police in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1, Wednesday 2023.
NLC Head of Media Headquarters, Benson Uper, who verified Ajaero’s arrest stated, “President of the Nigeria Labor Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero was picked up a few minutes ago from NLC state council secretariat by heavily armed policemen in Owerri and was taken to an unknown place”.
Workers Declare Nationwide Strike Over Besting of NLC President
NLC and TUC announced a plan to commence a nationwide strike over the beating and kidnapping of Ajaero. According to the report, the strike will commence on Wednesday, November 8.
Organized Labour Lists Conditions to Avoid Nationwide Strike
Organized labor listed some conditions that must be reached by the Federal Government to avoid a nationwide strike accompanied by the attack on Ajaero.
NLC and TUC said that the Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Barde, should be posted out of the State as soon as possible.
Ajaero is to be Flown Abroad for Medical treatment
The NLC publicity secretary, Benson Upah opined that Ajaero could not be treated at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Owerri because of the nature of the wounds he sustained during the tussle.
Benson Upah also said that, hence, the NLC President would be flown abroad for medical treatment.
