West African Examination Council (WAEC) to Use CBT for SSCE, Details Emerge
There may be several models of testing the young African student’s ability and competence.
This is an important regional examination board, WAEC has now cultivated the Computer Based Test (CBT).
This new development means that WAEC candidates would be assessed through means already positioned by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for its Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Utme).
The West African Examination Council (WAEC) Yaba, Lagos State declared on November 13, Monday that the introduction of the Computer Based Test (CBT) mode for the conduct of the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
A statement appended by the acting head of the public affairs unit of WAEC, Moyosola Adesina, said that the new innovation would kick off with the conduct of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates in February 2024.
Like JAMB, WAEC Begins CBT Exams
Proceeded with the advancement in technology, WAEC stated that it is set to acquire CBT in the conduct of assessment examinations.
WAEC’s Statement below :
“In line with global best practices, the Nigeria National Office of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) wishes to inform the general public, and all its stakeholders, that it has concluded plans to migrate its WASSCE for Private Candidates Examination Diets from Paper and Pencil Test to Computer Based Examination (CBE).
“The innovation will commence with WASSCE for Private Candidates, 2024 – First Series, which is slated to be held in February 2024. While the Objective Tests will be fully Computer Based, the Essay and Test of Practical papers will be hybrid, in which the examination questions will be delivered on screen and candidates are required to write answers on the answer booklets given to them.”

Also, WAEC said that while the “Objective Tests” will be fully Computer Based, “the Essay and Test of Practical papers will be hybrid, in which the examination questions will be delivered on screen and candidates need to write answer booklets handed over to them.
WAEC also stated:
“The examination will be conducted in urban centers/cities and candidates with special needs have been factored into the plan”.
“Registration for the examination will start on Monday, December 18, 2023
WAEC: “CBT is the Easiest Model”, said the Board Chairman of MIMS Prince Ogunbayi
The board chairman of MIMS educational services, Prince Adesegun Ogunbayi accepted the plan by WAEC to introduce the CBT mode in the administration of its exams.
Also, at a recent event in Lagos, Prince Ogunbayi, however, expressed his reservations about the idea.
WAEC on CBT Mode
It was reported that WAEC revealed that plans to introduce the CBT mode for his examinations have reached an advanced stage.
WAEC also outlined some challenges that have deleted the implementation of the plan. Among the concerns is that some schools are not fully furnished to handle the CBT Exams.
